P and S waves

Seismic waves carry the energy generated by an earthquake away from the epicentre.   They are mechanical  travel through a medium (the earth) and transport energy without transporting material, unlike wind which transports material (air molecules) with the energy that they carry, once a seismci wave has passed the material it has passed through remains in the same place.

P waves have a push and pull motion

S waves have a side to side or up and down motion
